UIL: No more January soccer?

Boys Soccer - Boys Soccer news

UIL executive director Charles Breithaupt shook the Athletic Committee up a little when he took a staff recommendation to deny changing the beginning date of the soccer season and asked for a study.

Assistant athletic director Peter Contreras told the Committee the origination of the soccer season dates (January-April) was not to conflict with the club soccer season.  The Committee voted to look at the season time line and the possibility of starting the season later in the spring.

The 2010 soccer season had obstacles at both the beginning and end. The beginning of the season was memorable with players competing in tournament in freezing temperatures. The season’s end was memorable with several regional tournament boys soccer teams missing players missing because the players elected to play club soccer’s “Dallas Cup” instead of their high school regional match.

Breithaupt’s remarks caught Texas Association of Soccer Coaches representative Erik Lane off guard.  Lane came to the Athletic Committee requesting that soccer teams be able to play at least one scrimmage before the holiday break; and teams dropping down to 2A still be able to participate in 4A soccer.

“That’s a can of worms,” Lane said. “(Texas Association of Soccer Coaches) is not looking into moving the season. Our goal is for kids to do both (high school and club) if they want to.”

Lane said scheduling problems between club and high school multiply if the season is moved. According to Lane, the current season has minimal conflicts with state club events like Dallas Cup and is finished by the time the national club season kicks into gear.

If weather is the main reason for a season change, Lane doesn’t see an easy solution.

“It’s cold in January, but if you move the season you have all kind of issues,” Lane said. “This is Texas, you get all kind of weather up until May.”

BSOC: Clear Brook coach retires

Boys Soccer - Boys Soccer news

After 35 years as an educator and coach, the last 19 years at Friendswood Clear Brook, boys soccer coach Rick Sickmiller is calling it a career.

It’s perfect planning for Sickmiller to retire at 62, a young enough age to be able to do and see other things, to travel, etc.  Sickmiller came to Brook in 1992 with the sole intent of adding to his teaching credentials.

Coaching soccer was basically the last thing he expected when he was being interviewed.
