SOC: State double the fun for Woodlands

Boys Soccer - Boys Soccer features

When Conroe The Woodlands boys soccer team was playing in the regional final last weekend for the fourth consecutive year, much of the discussion centered on how the Highlanders had yet to find their way to state.

So when The Woodlands defeated Round Rock Westwood on Saturday to advance to the state tournament this week, the Highlanders were excited about the opportunity ahead.

The Woodlands boys can anticipate having a lot of fans in attendance. The match before theirs will feature the school's girls team, which is returning to state for the second year in a row.

BSOC: El Paso confident for state

The El Paso soccer team is a confident bunch heading into its first Class 4A state final four tournament in school history this weekend.  In fact, the only thing giving them the jitters about their trip to Georgetown is the mode of transportation.

"You obviously hope to get this far but I didn't consciously ever think about it," said 14-year head coach Grey Godfrey. "All we wanted to do was get that first playoff win -- we weren't looking much beyond that."

When Houston Strake Jesuit takes the field in the Class 5A state semifinals at Georgetown ISD Stadium on Thursday, it will be a dream come true for coach Bill McDonald.

The soccer coach and athletics director has thought of the moment he might get to coach at state and after the Crusaders won the Region III championship on Sunday, the goal was finally reached.

“I can't say this isn't something I haven't dreamed of, because it is,” McDonald said.

SOC: Exchange student makes all-district

Coming from Germany to Terrell, the biggest obstacle Franz Hubner had to face was not only getting in a car and driving everywhere but also getting his paperwork cleared to be eligible to play this soccer season.

It became obvious early in the season that the German exchange student would not face the same obstacles on the soccer field.  Hubner led the Tigers to the brink of the playoffs, a remarkable feat considering the Tigers lost seven starters from last year’s veteran, experienced squad.

For his efforts, Hubner was named to the District 23-4A All-District team.

SOC: Jesuit announcer provides distinctive voice

The voice is only a college freshman, a Dallas transplant who just began his degree in communications at Saint Louis University broadcasting Dallas Jesuit’s run through the Region I-5A soccer tournament at Midland Grande Communications Stadium this weekend.

Three years ago, a couple of alumni providing radio coverage for Dallas Jesuit basketball and hockey asked Chris Ackles to put on a headset.

“When I started as a junior, I was doing it with some alumni who donated all the equipment,” Ackels said. “Nobody wanted to do soccer.”

Few teams deserve the coverage more than the Rangers’ soccer team, a talented squad that made the Region I-5A final last year. Ackels had the perfect background.

SOC: While coach away, Del Valle still plays

Boys Soccer - Boys Soccer features

Del Valle is playing this season without head coach Erasmo Vences, who is serving a yearlong stint in the Middle East . Without Vences, the Cardinals have won their first district title, and they will play Houston Lee tonight in a regional quarterfinal at Bryan Rudder.

"We want to be better every time so we can show him that even though he's over there, we can do good over here," senior Marlon Tenorio said.

Del Valle's soccer team was shaken up in May when Vences was informed that he would be deployed to Iraq in October.
