CC: Early results promising for Edinburg

Cross Country/Track

Edinburg girls cross country coach Tencha Lancaster isn’t a person to get ahead of herself. She learned that lesson two years ago. At the 2008 regional meet, the Lady Bobcats celebrated what they thought was a trip to the state meet, only to eventually learn of a miscalculation, which landed them one spot shy of the top three teams.

During the first-annual Rio Grande Valley Cross Country Coaches Association Classic this past weekend, Lancaster, who had a feeling her team had done well enough to win, instead waited for the official announcement.

CC: State's best slowed by injury, illness

Cross Country/Track

In four weeks, if her injury continues to heal, Dallas Greenhill's Chelsey Sveinsson wants to run again. She believes that a successful senior year in cross country is still a possibility. The feeling is shared by Lewisville Marcus' Craig Lutz, his summer training beset by illnesses.

Lutz, the defending Class 5A state cross country champion has battled illness -- staph infection, intestinal infection --- since a sinus infection began his summer. Sveinsson has not run since last spring when she found out the pain in her lower back was a stress fracture in her sacrum.

CC: Boswell runner ready for next step

Cross Country/Track

Ever since she was little, Maggie Escobar has been racing.

As a sophomore, Escobar won last year's UIL Class 4A state cross country meet with a time of 11 minutes, 14.78 seconds. That more than made up for her freshman year, when she finished second -- less than a second behind the champion.

"I was on top of the world last year, and that's been my proudest moment so far in my life," said Escobar, who was Fort Worth Boswell's first state cross country champion. "The last 400 of the race, I knew I could take them all and that's where I did it. I left them all in the dust, and I just knew I had it at that point. I knew I had it."

CC: Boerne Champion keeps expectations high

Cross Country/Track

Despite losing all but two runners from last year’s push to a second straight Class 4A championship, along with a Nike national title, Boerne Champion still has hopes of another banner season. The Chargers may not have the dominant appearance they had the previous two years, but the presence of seniors Travis Barclay and Josh Hernandez is a good place to start the rebuilding.
