UIL: Change of Season

Track/Cross Country - Girls track

There were no proposals made, but University Interscholastic League executive director Charles Breithaupt  told the Athletic Committee the staff is studying moving the Spring Meet season.

“We’ll discuss in the fall moving the Spring Meets (tennis, golf and track post-season) to late May, early June in 2012,” Breithaupt said.

The Spring Meet schedule has been in flux the last few years because of TAKS standardized testing. The TAKS schedule made moving the dates for the regional track meet necessary this spring. Instead of a customary Friday-Saturday schedule that utilizes the least amount of school time. Regional track meets were Monday and Tuesday this year.

After 18 years at Killeen ISD, including the last 10 helping to build Shoemaker High School's girls programs, Karen Koehler is retiring at the end of the school year.

Koehler's hands-on influence, which she's used to guide numerous district championship teams and individual success stories, is not done, however. It's time for another challenge, another accomplishment, another mark ... on a crossword puzzle at Starbucks, she joked.

Track/Cross Country - Girls track

New Braunfels senior Demi Payne — the city record holder, defending state champion and No. 6 vaulter in the nation, according to Track and Field News — failed to medal after timing out on her last attempt at 12-3.

Payne's final high school competition having been decided by a small digital clock.  Pole vaulters are put on a one-minute, 30-second timer during early rounds.

At most meets, an official uses a yellow flag to warn athletes their time is close to expiring. On Saturday, however, the official apparently wasn't paying attention, leaving the flag lying underneath his stool as Payne's allotment wound down.

And she did all of it with a pulled ligament in her right knee.
