TRK: Hallettsville coach charged with indency with a child

Track/Cross Country - Boys track

Hallettsville track coach Troy Edward Hines has been placed on administrative leave with pay after being arrested and charged with four counts of indecency with a child.

The charges are based on actions that are alleged to have taken place in 2006 when Hines was a teacher at St. Rose of Lima School in Schulenburg.  Hines, who was also an boys basketball assistant coach, graduated from Hallettsville High School in 1996 and has been teaching and coaching at the school for the past four years.

TRK: Galena Park North Shore wins in record fashion

Track/Cross Country - Boys track

Football is often the first thing associated with Galena Park North Shore.  With 88 points compiled from seven different events, the Mustangs put together a well-rounded effort to claim the Class 5A state track and field championship at Mike A. Myers Stadium.

It is the Mustangs’ first state track title in school history and the most points scored by a 5A state champion in meet history.

“It feels incredible,” senior DeAndrew White said. “The seniors said we couldn’t get it done in football so we had to get it done in track, no matter what. We set our goal, and we did it.”

DeSoto, which scored no points at state in 2009, finished second.

TRK: FW Wyatt relay honored

Track/Cross Country - Boys track

DeMario Wesley looked at the sky, looked at the crowd, saw the track in front of him and remembered. Twelve years ago, he could fly. He and three guys could fly.

On May 16, 1998, Wesley anchored the Fort Worth Wyatt boys 4x100-meter relay team to an electrifying time of 39.76 seconds to not only win the UIL state 5A championship, but also set the national record. The mark, which still stands, and the four runners who set it, were recognized Saturday before the start of the 5A competition at this year's state meet.

TRK: WO-Stark repeats team title

Track/Cross Country - Boys track

Phillip Jones delivered the type of Saturday which typified his West Orange-Stark track team.  It would rate as championship caliber – as in 3A boys state team back-to-back champions.

The Mustangs did it again in Austin at the 99th annual University Interscholastic League’s state track and field championships, winning two relays and giving Trey Franks and James Haynes an ideal, early graduation present.

TRK: Rio Grande City shot put streak continues

Track/Cross Country - Boys track

Tradition lives in Rio Grande City. On his last attempt, RGC sophomore Alex Garza unleashed a beast of a throw Saturday that sailed 63 feet to win the Class 5A boys shot put state title at the UIL State Track & Field Championships in Austin.

Garza who went over 60 feet on his last three attempts, won the third straight state title in the shot for RGC. Former Rattlers thrower Stephen Saenz won it as a junior in 2008 and last year as a senior.

TRK: Bruceville-Eddy ends medal drought

Track/Cross Country - Boys track

A skip-step as the gun sounded was Bruceville-Eddy junior Tye Doty's only hitch Friday morning at Mike A. Myers Stadium, where he vindicated himself with a victory in the Class 2A boys 3,200 and returned his school to the top of the podium with a gold medal at the University Interscholastic League State Track and Field Meet.

Doty had waited 342 days to erase one memory. Bruceville-Eddy had gone 26 years without even one gold medal.  One year after fading to a fifth-place finish in the 1,600 as a sophomore, Doty made sure history would not repeat itself.
