Corpus Christi Ray state qualifier Coy Dobson has decided not to play high school tennis his senior year or attend any more classes at the school. Dobson, who is just a few credits shy of graduating, said he plans to complete correspondence school from home to earn the remaining credits needed for his high school diploma.

Lubbock Coronado baseball coach Jimmy Webster is headed to the collegiate ranks. Webster, who has been a high school baseball head coach for nearly 20 years, said Thursday he’s leaving Coronado to become the director of baseball operations at Texas Tech.

Klein Oak High’s Allison and Melissa Burckhartt proved that determination and perseverance can be major factors in winning a state championship. The Burckhartt sisters returned to the UIL Class 5A Tennis Championships in Austin for the second straight season, this time they came back with a gold medal.
“We’d grown as a team, and we were a lot less freaked out by the pressure of state, since it was the second time around,” said Allison, who will play tennis for Oklahoma State next season.
The Burckhartts knew that winning a state title would most likely involve upsetting undefeated defending state champions, seniors Micah Hermsdorf and Ariel Morton of Klein High.

The Bishop boys doubles team of Caleb Holmes and Josh Smith won the 2A crown, defeating Malakoff’s James King and Dylan Neal 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at Penick-Allison in Austin. The last time Bishop claimed a tennis title was 1972, when future Texas A&M-Corpus Christi coach Steve Denton won the boys’ 3A crown. It was the Coastal Bend’s first boys doubles title since the King duo of Doug Peterson and Jeff Lim won in 1988.
“They both wanted to be state champs,” Bishop coach Claudia Esquivel said. “Honestly, I‘m not trying to sound cocky, but I knew they could get this far. It was a matter of doing it.”
