TEN: Klein Oak team wins girls doubles

Tennis - Girls tennis

Klein Oak High’s Allison and Melissa Burckhartt proved that determination and perseverance can be major factors in winning a state championship. The Burckhartt sisters returned to the UIL Class 5A Tennis Championships in Austin for the second straight season, this time they came back with a gold medal.

“We’d grown as a team, and we were a lot less freaked out by the pressure of state, since it was the second time around,” said Allison, who will play tennis for Oklahoma State next season.

The Burckhartts knew that winning a state title would most likely involve upsetting undefeated defending state champions, seniors Micah Hermsdorf and Ariel Morton of Klein High.

TEN: Surgeries don't keep G-P senior from 4A title

Tennis - Girls tennis

Nothing in tennis had been easy lately for Gregory-Portland senior Lauren Quisenberry.  Not the seven surgeries. Not the missed time. Not the state quarterfinal or semifinal.

And certainly not the gold medal she could drape around her neck Tuesday.

When Dallas Carter’s Idia Amen ended a brief rally by hitting into the net, Gregory-Portland’s Quisenberry sank to the ground, wrapped her arms around her head and then pointed skyward. After a 2-hour, 30-minute finals match, Quisenberry delivered the area’s first tennis title in nine years, defeating Amen for the Class 4A championship, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 at the World of Tennis.

Tennis - Girls tennis

Over the past decade, Abilene Wylie has established itself as the gold standard for Class 3A tennis, annually sending players to and performing well at the team and individual state tournaments. But with all the success Wylie has had, the Bulldogs never had a day as good as how Tuesday played out at Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

All three qualifying doubles teams claimed championship, making it a banner day for a program with a list of accomplishments few can match.

TEN: Franklin continues tennis title tradition

Kayla Casey wears much smaller shoes than Austin Klores.  That doesn't mean she can't follow in her fellow Franklin Lion's footsteps.

Casey won her second consecutive Class 2A singles championship Tuesday, rolling to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sunnyvale's Emily Lobnitz at the UIL State Tennis Tournament.

Klores began a four-year string of state championships his freshman season in 2005 with a victory in boys singles. Casey, a sophomore, is now two for two, keeping alive a string of six straight years with a singles championships for Franklin. If the string continues next year, Casey won't be the one to keep it going. She plans to play doubles with her younger sister, Carrie, next year.

TEN: Waco Midway siblings win mixed doubles

Tennis - Girls tennis

Waco Midway's Kolby and Kenna Kilgo just couldn’t seem to get it together at the same time Tuesday. But when they absolutely had to, the siblings became a brick wall.

Facing a third-set tiebreaker with the Class 4A state mixed doubles tennis championship on the line, the Kilgos ran off seven straight points for a 6-4, 5-7, 7-6 (0) victory over Richardson Pearce’s Jeffrey Stulmaker and Julianne Jackson at Lakeway World of Tennis.

The same two teams met in the Region II tournament championship match April 21, with the Kilgos dominating throughout in a 6-0, 6-3 win.
