TEN: Bishop's doubles win historical

Tennis - Boys tennis

The Bishop boys doubles team of Caleb Holmes and Josh Smith won the 2A crown, defeating Malakoff’s James King and Dylan Neal 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at Penick-Allison in Austin. The last time Bishop claimed a tennis title was 1972, when future Texas A&M-Corpus Christi coach Steve Denton won the boys’ 3A crown.  It was the Coastal Bend’s first boys doubles title since the King duo of Doug Peterson and Jeff Lim won in 1988.

“They both wanted to be state champs,” Bishop coach Claudia Esquivel said. “Honestly, I‘m not trying to sound cocky, but I knew they could get this far. It was a matter of doing it.”

Tyler Lee juniors James and Mitch Martell are now permanent fixtures in the history of their school.

The doubles duo needed two tiebreakers to down Nick Naumann and Nate Lammons of Conroe The Woodlands College Park, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (9-7), Tuesday morning in the Class 5A boys doubles championship at World of Tennis at Lakeway in Austin.

Mitch, who admits he let out a loud scream after match point was completed, said this was made all the more special because of James.

TEN: Mason wins 4 of 5 in 1A tennis

Tennis - Boys tennis

Once again, the Mason High School tennis program painted the town purple.

The Punchers brought home four more state titles from the Class 1A state championships at the World of Tennis in Lakeway on Tuesday, boosting their incredible state-title count to 71 and showing why Mason is rightfully called the tennis capital of Texas.

Matt Banner won in boys singles, Makenzie Mitchell won in girls singles, Ellie Blair and Margaret Lemke won an all-Mason final in girls doubles, and Thach Martin and Michael Vargas rallied past Menard in boys doubles.

Paint Rock’s mixed doubles team of Tabitha Bryant and Kody Keeney kept Mason from sweeping the entire tournament.

Wink sophomore pulls off golf/tennis double

Tennis - Boys tennis

Traffic hasn’t even begun to bottle up the streets yet. This early in the morning, most people are still trying to slog their way through their morning coffee.  But the lights are on at the University of Texas' Penick-Allison Tennis Center.

Wink sophomore Seth Abbott is the reason for the early start. Abbott qualified to compete at state as the doubles partner to his brother, Shea, and the No. 3 golfer on Wink’s Region I-1A title-winning squad.

Only one problem. Both of those events were scheduled to start at 9 a.m Monday, so the UIL moved up the Wink duo’s opening match against Era’s Gates Anderson and Zachary Denison to the crack of dawn.

TEN: Tyler Lee duo takes 65-1 record to state

Tennis - Boys tennis

Just try and hit a passing shot by Tyler Lee juniors James and Mitch Martell. James is 6-4 with Mitch measuring right at 6-2, and both have the wingspans to match.

Maybe that's why the doubles duo has only lost once in 66 matches.
