Webb: Population disparity another issue for HS athletics

Other

The University Interscholastic League (UIL) deals with changing school sizes every two years in a never-ending attempt to create as much potential parity in competition between high schools within the state of Texas. Some of the changes over the past 20 years have been significant, such as creating divisions within classifications, but still do not address the growing problem of disparate school sizes, particularly at the 4A and 5A level.

Sherrington: Jesuit junior story of Byron Nelson

Other

How about this: Until Tiger or Phil or Ernie comes back to Las Colinas, we grant Jordan Spieth a permanent exemption.

Just one caveat: He must remain 16. Helps the story line.

The pride of Dallas Jesuit's class of '11 is the best thing to happen to the tournament since Byron Nelson's handwritten invitations.

Jaklewicz: Weather makes covering playoffs own sport

Other

To cover the high school baseball and softball playoffs last weekend, it took a GPS, a direct line to the National Weather Service, galoshes and lots of patience.

Thanks to persistent rainy weather over the greater portion of West Texas and the Panhandle, few series were played as first planned.

Cessna: Richardson takes "press" out of "press box"

Other

If getting thrown out of a warm-up baseball game between Rudder and New Waverly wasn’t enough, six days later Bryan Eagle's Robert Cessna wasn’t allowed to sit in the Richardson press box for its baseball playoff game against A&M Consolidated.

That’s so wrong in so many ways. My understanding is that Richardson is noted for its academics. Tim Cowlishaw and Bill Nichols, pretty good sports writers, even graduated from Richardson. You’d think that anyone put in charge of running the press box would know to admit the press. (Next time I'll have Tim or Bill vouch for me).

Cessna wasn’t given a seat in the press box because the guy running the scoreboard said that they wouldn’t want their conversations to appear in the paper...

Cessna: Ump clears stands, including writer

Other

Bryan Eagle's Robert Cessna got thrown out of Saturday's baseball warmup game between Bryan Rudder and New Waverly. Before the bottom of the eighth inning, the home plate umpire cleared New Waverly's side where he was sitting.

It was bizarre to say the least.

Gholson: Odds against her don't bother Wichita Falls junior

Other

Two of the three Class 4A girls medal winners from a year ago will be back in Austin this week looking to add more golf trinkets to their collection. One of those — Fort Worth Arlington Heights' Chelsea Mocio — is the defending state champ. At this year’s regional tournament, Mocio beat Wichita Falls junior Abby Bobo by 13 shots.

The Region I-4A runner-up — Hereford's Alisa White — will also return to Austin. She was six shots better than Bobo when they played Bentwood Country Club in San Angelo just three weeks ago. So the competition is going to be tough for the Wichita Falls High School junior when she shows up for her first state tournament.

That doesn’t bother Bobo. She still thinks she can win one of those medals. And the golder the better.

“She doesn’t think she is supposed to lose, and it is hard to convince her that she might not win because she has won so often,” WFHS coach Dan McDonald said.
