Volleyball

Linda Richter has gotta be the least-known coaching superstar in the Brazos Valley. The Cameron volleyball coach posted the 700th victory of her career last month when the Lady Yoe beat Del Valle at the West Tournament. Richter's career record now stands at 712-324.

This 700 club is ultra-exclusive. According to the national high school sports record book, Richter is only the fourth Texas coach to reach the mark. Consider the source somewhat shaky since Richter wasn't on the list for the 689 wins she had coming into this season, but the old Bum Phillips line about Earl Campbell certainly applies: If Richter isn't in a class by herself, it doesn't take long to call the roll.

Austin Westlake. Lewisville Hebron. Lucas Lovejoy.

That’s not just a short list of three of the best volleyball teams in the state — those are teams Corpus Christi King has already beaten this season.

Or better yet, teams the No. 1 Mustangs defeated.

King (25-3 overall) — the first top-ranked volleyball team from Corpus Christi — likes that distinction so much, it wants to keep it.

“I don’t think that No. 1 ranking will sink in until we get to state and win that No. 1 spot — we don’t want to rest,” said 6-foot-1 Mustangs senior hitter Dempsey Thornton, who plans to sign a letter of intent in early November to play Division I college volleyball for UTSA next season.

Karen Richardson Granger's name is displayed on a placard in the Arlington High gym, marking her membership in the Colt volleyball program's wall of fame. On a recent Tuesday night in that same gym, outside hitter Kaitlyn Granger hammered home several pivotal kills as the Colts rallied for a five-game victory against Keller.

It's been 20 years since the elder Granger helped lead Arlington to the state tournament. But for Arlington coach Sue Cauley, the past comes alive every time Kaitlyn, Karen's daughter, steps foot on the court.

"They're the same person, just in different bodies," Cauley said. "She's identical to her mother."

FB: Kicker's cancer battle inspires Cedar Hill

Football Features

Locked in a battle for his life, Ryan Sparkman kept his role as a defender for the Cedar Hill soccer team. Kept coming out to football practice, even on the bad days.  Even on the days that his head coach told Sparkman he could take a break.

But that’s not the attitude Sparkman took into his battle with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a deadly form of cancer that doctors diagnosed in his body Feb. 2.

“The kid was doing chemo treatments during spring football,” Cedar Hill football coach Joey McGuire said. “He had a port in his body, over his ribs on the right side. And when he came out to practice, you could tell he didn’t feel good.”
