Mount Vernon AD resigns

Football - Football News

Mount Vernon athletic director and football coach Charles Swann recently resigned his position. Swann, who has coached a total of eight years in Mount Vernon, said the move to retire was made due to a change in administration. His career coaching record is 65-77-4.

Current Mount Vernon assistant coach Karl Whitehurst has been elevated to interim head coach for the 2010 season.

FB: La Porte coach honored by THSCA

When Carroll Lundin was notified earlier this year that he would be inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor, he began to reflect.

The former La Porte coach was one of five former coaches to be inducted into the THSCA Hall of Honor at its annual luncheon on Wednesday at the 78th annual THSCA Convention and Coaching School.

Pasadena, TCU multi-sport star McCarty dies

Football - Football News

Mickey McCarty, a multi-sport standout at Pasadena High School and at TCU who was drafted to play pro football, baseball and basketball in 1968 and who twice survived heart transplant surgery, died Wednesday after a nine-month struggle with pancreatic cancer.

McCarty, 63, who lived in League City, was one of Greater Houston's best athletes at a time when the area produced such standouts as Ken Spain, Norm Bulaich, Loyd Wainscott and Chris Gilbert in the mid-1960s.

FB: Brown wants UT in state championship rotation

The University of Texas' Royal-Memorial Stadium qualifies as an ideal location for future high school football state championship games, according Texas football coach Mack Brown. Brown has made a pitch to have high school state title games on campus and University Interscholastic League officials said Austin will be considered as a potential site.

FB: Reliant Stadium says its still state title game worthy

After Cowboys Stadium was selected last month as the 2010 UIL state football championship site, Reliant Park assistant general manager Jeff Gaines told the Houston Chronicle that Reliant Stadium should not be ruled out completely.

"There is a possibility we could do it," he said. "For instance, like two years ago. When state was here and the Texans weren't home that weekend, the field held up. Three games in one day would be hard, but we certainly aren't out of the running."

FB: Watkins earns THSCA Hall of Honor nod

Tommy Watkins played football at Odessa High during its Golden Age.

A 1953 graduate of OHS, Watkins roamed the halls at 13th and Dotsy when the names Byron Townsend and Hayden Fry weren’t memories of days gone by but recent reminders of the 1946 Bronchos state football championship.

While in college, the coaching bug also bit Watkins, starting him on a path that would become a lifelong passion.  That path will take Watkins into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
